Denise Chiarella is a playwright and screenwriter. She is a founding member-playwright of DGPG (Dramatists Guild Playwriting Group) in New York, a group dedicated to supporting playwrights with strong, diverse contemporary voices.
Denise’s plays include Swimming with Jellyfish, Entangled Pairs, Nike and Lisa, Admission, and Terroir, among others. Denise’s plays have been produced or developed at theaters in New York and throughout the country, including the Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Players, Primary Stages short play series, and The New York Society Library. Denise has been the recipient of several new play commissions.
Denise has recently completed the screenplay of a contemporary Italian novel that she also translated into English.
Denise is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and The Playwrights’ Center. She studied theater and literature at the University of London, has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and holds Masters Degrees in Linguistics and Education.
When not writing, Denise can be found exploring both city and country roads with her black and white Dalmatian, Giulia, or with her black and white Vespa, Ettore. Denise is three-quarters of the way through her quest to visit every (known) painting by Caravaggio.
